A peptide adhesive molded by magnesium glues Rubisco's subunits together.

چکیده
Rubisco enzymes play central roles in carbon fixation, with potential importance in biotechnology, but have eluded a full description of their multistep assembly and function. A new article describes the fascinating discovery that some archaeal Rubiscos contain a built-in assembly domain inserted into an otherwise canonical Rubisco fold, providing a tremendous expansion of our understanding of the diversity of naturally occurring Rubiscos.

Bioinspired Nanoparticulate Medical Glues for Minimally Invasive Tissue Repair.
Delivery of tissue glues through small-bore needles or trocars is critical for sealing holes, affixing medical devices, or attaching tissues together during minimally invasive surgeries. Inspired by the granule-packaged glue delivery system of sandcastle worms, a nanoparticulate formulation of a viscous hydrophobic light-activated adhesive based on poly(glycerol sebacate)-acrylate is developed....
متن کاملNovel biomimetic adhesives based on algae glue.
Inspired by the remarkable adhesive capabilities to wet surfaces of the secretes of the brown alga Fucus serratus, novel glues have been designed and characterized. Formulations composed of phloroglucinol, alginate, and calcium ions are capable of adhering to a variety of surfaces. Rheological data show that the presence of phloroglucinol lowers the amount of Ca(2+) ions required for sol-gel tr...
متن کاملSea star tenacity mediated by a protein that fragments, then aggregates.
Sea stars adhere firmly but temporarily to various substrata as a result of underwater efficient adhesive secretions released by their tube feet. Previous studies showed that this material is mainly made up of proteins, which play a key role in its adhesiveness and cohesiveness. Recently, we solubilized the majority of these proteins and obtained 43 de novo-generated peptide sequences by tandem...
متن کاملAdhesion of tissue glues to different biological substrates
Tissue adhesives are attractive materials with potential to replace the use of sutures and staples in the repair of the injured tissues. The research field of tissue adhesives is dynamically growing, and different methods and tissue models are employed to evaluate the adhesive properties of newly developed materials. It is thus difficult to directly compare the properties of materials developed...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of Hafting Adhesives and the Implications for Compound Tool Technology
Experimental studies of hafting adhesives and modifications to compound tool components can demonstrate the extent to which human ancestors understood and exploited material properties only formally defined by science within the last century. Discoveries of Stone Age hafting adhesives at archaeological sites in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa have spurred experiments that sought to replicat...
